EL PASO - El Paso Times reporter Diana Washington Valdez will be the recipient this year of the prestigious Ñ Frank del Olmo Print Journalist of the Year Award from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
"The selection committee noted your extensive work as a journalist, putting yourself at personal risk to give a voice to the voiceless, qualities often practiced and encouraged by Frank del Olmo," wrote NAHJ Executive Director Ivan Roman in a letter to Washington Valdez.
The long-time El Paso Times reporter has written extensively about the murders of hundreds of women in Juarez. She is also the author of one of the most highly-regarded books on the subject, [The Killing Fields: Harvest of Women].
The award is named for Los Angeles Times Associate Editor and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Frank del Olmo. Del Olmo died in 2004 at the age of 55.
Washington Valdez will receive the award during NAHJ's 23rd Annual Noche de Triunfos Journalism Awards Gala at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., on September 12 (http://www.nahj.org/).
